Personal Digital Assistant ( PDA )
What is PDA? PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant. A PDA is a handheld computer which it is also known as small or palmtop computers . Therefore, PDA is defined as the dummy mobile device due to its high mobility, whose functions is determined by what kind of program and information is downloaded from PC . Newer PDAs have both color screens and audio capabilities that enabling them to used as mobile phones, smartphones, web browsers, or portable media players. Most of PDA can access the Internet, intranets or extranet via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide-Area Networks (WWANs).
The main purpose of a PDA is to act as an electronic organizer or day planner that is portable, easy to use and capable of sharing information with your PC.The first PDA created was in the mid of 1980s which it is completed with keyboards for input, a small display and basic features such as an alarm clock, calendar, telephone pad and calculator. Then this device developed more in 1986. In 1993, Apple introduced the Newton MessagePad where it provided users with an electronic notepad, to-do list, calendar, telephone log and address file applications. However, this Newton MessagePad was too big, expensive and applications. In March of 1996, original PalmPilot introduced by Palm Computing. It ran for a weeks on AAA batteries, was easy to use and could store thousands of contacts, appointments and notes but users need to used a stylus and the Graffiti language to input data since it is lack of keyboard because of its small size. Thus, Microsoft released Windows CE that is the first operating system for mobile devices in November 1996.
Nowadays, a typical PDA has a touch screen for entering data, using softkeys, a directional pad and either the numeric keypad or a thumb keyboard for input. Even PDA has many advantages such as portable, small, and high mobility, it also has disadvantages in aspect of the memory space and the computing power which are not comparative to the Personal Computer but PDA still can be an extremely useful tool, replacing the cell phone while adding the functionality of an organizer, planner, and mini-computer node. Moreover, it allowed for digital note taking by using the simple programs such as dictionaries, thesaurus, and software. Therefore, it is suitable to be use as a learning mobile in education field mostly among the students and the lecturers. Indirectly, it will lead us to be up to date with the trend of technologies in this new era.
PDA in education field among Malaysian society, we have received a positive feedback from students and all walk of life. This is shown that PDA might be one of necessary gadgets for everybody in the future. Indirectly, our society will be highly developed skills in the use of the productivity and communication tools. Thus, it will make Malaysian as fully developed country in terms of national unity and social cohesion, in terms of our economy, social justice, political stability and serve to compete with others countries. So that, the willing of government to achieve Vision 2020 will come true.
